A police officer in uniform smiles at an elementary school child, hands him the only presents he is likely to receive this year and wishes him a Merry Christmas..... Yes, the child deserves to have a Merry Christmas just like all other children. This is where Navidad en el Barrio started. What you don't see, unless you watch the Christmas Program carefully, is that many presents are not unwrapped - sometimes none of them are unwrapped. Many of the children have brothers and sisters who will receive nothing unless they give their presents to them. So, the wrapping paper stays on. These children have learned to give selflessly of what they have to others less fortunate. This is what Navidad en el Barrio has become. If you look very carefully, you see the admiration in the children's faces. These children have discovered that police officers are real people who care. While many neighborhood children fear and distrust the police, these children learn to respect and admire them. Those of us who witness these events resolve to make them happen as often as possible for as long as we live. This is who Navidad en el Barrio is today.
