Nelson Hiraldo
My name is Nelson Giraldo. I was born in Colombia, South
America to a large family consisting of ten brothers and two sisters. My
parents made great sacrifices to bring us to the United States and we
lived on welfare for a period of time. Many great people in the community
helped us get on our feet.
These experiences have instilled in me a sense of gratitude and a moral
expectation to give my community the same privileges that were afforded to
me. I graduated from Austin High School in 1977, and have been employed
for 19 years with the Houston Police Department, where I proudly serve as
a Sergeant.
About five years ago, I had the fortune of being a Liaison for Navidad en
el Barrio, and I have been a proud Board Member for the last two years.
Working with Officer Israel Gomez and what he does for our community has
given me an incredible inspiration to follow his lead. His commitment to
the low income children, their families, and to the elderly people in our
community is genuine and heartwarming. My hope is that by making a
difference in a child he or she will grow up to also contribute to his or
her community. After all, "Our Children Are Our Future".
