Lockdown
Realizing the multitude of ethnic backgrounds within our country, Navidad
en el Barrio embarked in a program/party for teens where they were treated
to workshops intended to educate our youth in our diverse society.
The Lockdown Party invites teens between the ages of
13 and 18 and ensures that all participants are of multi-racial
backgrounds. Teens are separated and mixed in order for them to interact
with other cultures. They participate in ice breakers, act out scenarios
on different types of discriminations, enlightening the audience on
different occurrences within their peer groups, they listen to role
models, and the day concludes with a pizza party, dance, and each child
that participates receives a $25.00 gift check to a local shopping mall.
Our mission is to plant a seed in our children’s
hearts when it comes to dealing with different types of discriminations
that exist in our society. Our hope and dream is to better prepare them
when they encounter a negative situation.
Special Olympics
Navidad en el Barrio assists Special Olympians in their quests to reach
the state games in Arlington, Texas. We sponsored the Austin High School
Olympians who participated in the state games and everyone that traveled
had a great time. Many medals were won by our team. We hope to expand our
support to at least 5 schools in the near future.
