๐ Annual Christmas Program
Making Childrenโs Wishes Come True Since 1987
For 39 years, Navidad En El Barrioโs Annual Christmas Program has brought people together to create a joyful Christmas experience for children from Title I schools across the Houston area.
Each year, approximately 50 schools participate, with about 40 children from each school, nearly 2,000 children in all.
What makes this program so special is not only its size, but the number of people who come together to make it possible.
Schools. Volunteers. Sponsors. Community partners. Law enforcement. Public servants. Businesses. Families. Donors. Board members. Friends.
Everyone has a part in creating the magic.
โจ A Christmas Celebration to Remember
From the moment the children arrive, the day is filled with excitement.
Over the years, children have enjoyed visits from Pancho Claus, school bands, Star Wars characters, towering robots, community mascots, motorcycle clubs escorting Santa in, special guests, community leaders, law enforcement partners, local media personalities, volunteers, and entertainers who help bring the celebration to life.
There is music, laughter, food, surprises, and plenty of cheering.
For a few special hours, everything is about the children.
They get to enjoy the show, spend time with friends, meet favorite characters, share a meal, and experience the excitement of Christmas surrounded by people who are happy to see them smile.
And of course, one of the biggest moments comes at the end:
๐ The gifts.
For some children, the presents they receive through Navidad En El Barrio may be among the only gifts waiting for them at Christmas.
That is why some children choose to enjoy the celebration but save their gifts to open at home, making the moment last a little longer.
Thousands of presents are purchased, sorted, wrapped, organized, and prepared for participating schools. When funding allows, two bicycles are also awarded to each school, with selections coordinated by School Coordinators and Liaisons.
Some children are also chosen through our Little Wishes Program to receive additional gifts selected especially for them.
But the greatest gift has never been what is inside the wrapping paper.
โค๏ธโค๏ธIt is the time, love, encouragement, and hope given by every volunteer, coordinator, liaison, sponsor, donor, partner, and supporter who helps make the day possible.
Those are the gifts we hope every child carries home. ๐
๐ซ Our Schools, School Coordinators & Liaisons
Our participating schools are at the heart of the Christmas Program.
School Coordinators help organize students, communicate with families, manage important details, and prepare their groups for the big day.
School Liaisons work closely with coordinators, help guide schools through the process, support transportation and program-day logistics, and stay with their school groups throughout the experience.
Their generosity often goes even further. Many help provide or coordinate breakfast before the children leave school and lunch during the program, contributing their own time, resources, and care.
They know their children. They advocate for them. They help keep everything moving. And year after year, they show up with incredible heart. We could not do this without them. โค๏ธ
๐ Hundreds of Volunteers
The Annual Christmas Program depends on hundreds of volunteers who give their time throughout the season.
Some help unpack, wrap and organize gifts.
Some help with registration.
Some work behind the scenes.
Some serve during the program.
And many come together for one of our biggest traditions - Gift Wrapping Day, when thousands of presents must be sorted, wrapped, labeled, and prepared for participating schools.
Volunteers come from everywhere.
Corporations.
Schools.
Churches.
Clubs.
Families.
Community groups.
Law enforcement agencies.
And individuals who simply want to help.
Some have volunteered with Navidad En El Barrio for decades. Others are joining us for the very first time.
By the end of the day, everyone becomes part of the same Navidad family.
๐ค Sponsors, Donors & Community Partners
Every gift, meal, activity, and experience is made possible because people and organizations choose to support the mission.
Our generous sponsors, donors, businesses, corporations, community organizations, and partners provide financial support, gifts, services, volunteer teams, and resources throughout the year.
Some sponsor events.
Some donate directly.
Some provide products or services.
Some bring entire teams of volunteers.
And many support Navidad En El Barrio simply because they believe in what happens when a community works together.
Every contribution matters.
Every ticket purchased at a fundraiser matters.
Every sponsorship matters.
Every donation matters.
Every gift matters.
Together, those contributions turn into thousands of moments of joy for children and families.
๐ฎ Our Law Enforcement Family & Community Partners
Navidad En El Barrio has shared a special connection with Houstonโs law enforcement community from the very beginning.
Our founder, Israel Gomez, is a retired Houston police officer, and members of our law enforcement family have supported the organization since its earliest days.
Through the years, they have helped welcome schools, manage traffic and bus flow, load gifts, support event logistics, assist with special appearances, and spend time connecting with the children and our community.
Their support reflects a long tradition of service, friendship, and community connection.
Alongside them are public servants, community leaders, clubs, organizations, businesses, and local partners who continue to show up year after year.
Different backgrounds. Different roles. One shared purpose.
To serve.
To give.
To encourage.
โค๏ธ A Working Board That Leads by Serving
Behind the scenes is a Board of Directors that does far more than attend meetings.
Navidad En El Barrio has a working, volunteer Board whose members give countless hours to planning programs, coordinating fundraisers, building partnerships, purchasing gifts, working with schools, organizing volunteers, solving problems, and preparing for each event.
They serve because they believe in the mission.
They serve because they care deeply about the community.
And they serve because they know the work makes a difference.
For them, the greatest reward is seeing the results of that work come to life โ in the smiles of children, the gratitude of families, and the strength of a community coming together.
We are also deeply grateful to the past Board members and longtime leaders who helped build, guide, and sustain Navidad En El Barrio through the years. Their service is part of the foundation that allows todayโs Board to continue the work.
Together with generations of volunteers, sponsors, partners, and supporters, that commitment has helped carry Navidad En El Barrio forward for nearly four decades.
๐ A Family Tradition for Generations
Since 1987, Navidad En El Barrio has become more than an annual event. For many, it has become a family tradition.
Longtime volunteers bring their children.
Parents bring grandchildren.
Friends bring friends.
Corporate teams return year after year.
Community partners introduce new generations to the mission.
People who first became involved decades ago continue showing up, while new volunteers join the family each year.
That continuity is part of what makes the Christmas Program so meaningful.
The faces may change.
The entertainment may change.
The decorations may change.
But the heart behind the program remains the same. People caring for people.
โจ Created by the Community
The Annual Christmas Program is not made possible by one person, one company, or one group.
It happens because everyone contributes something.
A volunteer gives a few hours.
A school coordinator organizes children.
A liaison helps guide a school.
A sponsor provides funding.
A donor gives what they can.
A business sends employees.
A community partner lends support.
A family attends a fundraiser.
A Board member spends another evening planning.
And together, those individual acts become something much bigger.
โจ Navidad En El Barrio is here because of YOU.
Created by the community.
Driven by the community.
Serving the community. โจ
That has been our story since 1987.
And with the continued support of this incredible community, we will keep Making Childrenโs Wishes Come True.
